Describe the meaning of these computer terms. Give examples where applicable.
1. Processing:
The way information systems convert raw data into useful information, for example calculating by the computer.
2. Access time:
The time the CPU spent to get data or store data into hard disk surface. It is measure in milliseconds and nanoseconds.
3. Optical disk:
Storage disk where data is stored by altering the surface of the disk (optic disk), and read by reading the reflection of light (laser beam) from the surface of the disk.
4. Business application:
Software packages used by the business corporation in running their information system. For example Word processing, database packages.
5. Bit map:
Each pixel on the screen (like a single dot). This is a single bit of information. (use program MS paint and draw a line, then enlarge your line, you can see the line is series of dots)
6. Dedicated file server:
A high-end computer, (or a group of it) that normally do a single task or specific task, with large hard disk and storage, for the purpose of the network facilities only. Example; file storage, firewall, proxy, cache.
7. Intranet:
Local sharing of information. It is not shared into the internet or the outside world. Information is access just like the internet, using internet browser.
8. Network storage:
Large hard disk connected to the network (not to a computer), and shared by the computers in the network, through the network system. All users can access their files in the network storage with secured password. It can also be used by servers in the network for storing software.
9. Why is digital more accurate than analogue?
Analogue transmission is affected by voltage of data transmission and distorted by the environment. This will affect the quality of analogue signal and so the data is not so accurate. For example the song store in the old cassette.
Digital is a series of 0 and 1 or Yes or No. So it will not easily be affected by voltage during transmission.
10. For a high quality printing of graphic, why do you prefer laser printer not inkjet or dot matrix printer?
